2012 Mechapinoy OmniMecha Contest: Apocalypse Now!

2012 Mechapinoy OmniMecha Contest: Apocalypse Now!

Just a tiny bit late this time. Here's the first MechaPinoy in-house for this year. Gear up and survive!

Here it is, folks, the rules for the OmniMecha Contest for 2012. The theme is… Apocalypse Now!
1st Mechapinoy In-house Contest for 2012: Omnimecha: Apocalypse Now!
I. Contest Objective
Build your “Final Battle in the Final War” unit, with all weapons and armor attached.

II. Contest Rules and Regulations
1. Open to Mechapinoy modelers. Bandai Gunpla model kits in ALL SCALES, including SD, are allowed.
2. Full modification of the kit is encouraged. Arm it, paint it, and weather it (weapons and armor add-ons and modifications must be carried/attached to the unit)!
3. No dioramas or vignettes, plain flight stands or undetailed/unpainted Bandai Action Bases are allowed. If you will paint the Action Base, then it must be in a single, solid color – no shading or weathering.
4. Judging will take into account the “feasibility” factor of the unit in battle. Geek talk comes in. Judges’ rulings will be final.

III. Criteria for Judging
1. Basic Assembly Skills (absence of mold lines, flash, inappropriate gaps, proper parts alignment, completeness, absence of excess adhesive marks) — 30%
2. Painting (smooth paint texture unless for obvious reasons, absence of overspray, brush streaks, complete paint coverage, color line separation from masking/brushing/spraying, overall color combination) – 30%
3. Detailing (includes parts modifications, paint detailing like shading and paneling, weathering, proper decal/marking positioning and usage) – 20%
4. Feasibility (Science fiction application: Will it match against the others in battle? Do the armor add-on parts and weaponry serve a hypothetically practical purpose, and can be held or attached without overuse of anime physics? Think about the “world view” of Gunpla Beginner’s G. Is the model impressive? Does it appeal to the audience? Does it look good from all angles and distances (The model may look good from a distance but turns out ugly at close-up)? – 20%

IV. Exact Date and Time for Awarding and Judging
- To be announced, but definitely within the month of July, to make way and give contestants time for the Bankee Nationals, also.

SD Astray Zero IWSP

This was my entry for 2011's SD Con. That's one kit slashed off of my WIF list.

This is an MSV for the Civilian Astray. I wanted to do the beam cannon, double Gatling shield, and missile launcher, but the kit was just too small to put all that stuff on. Although I did have all the stuff to put on it, when I did attach them by blutac, there was just so many things going on I had to remove them. Aside from that, the scabbards from the IWSP couldn't fit under the armpits of the SD Red Frame, I had to put the swords on one hand. I kinda liked that.

There were indeed a lot of mods on this kit, making it the biggest competitor in the contest. Literally.

See?

Mods. The striker pack, Gatling shield and anti-ship swords came from the HG Strike Rouge IWSP kit. The wing shields came from the no grade 1/144 Strikes with the Gatling pieces from the HG Heavyarms Custom. Its casing and the boosters came from pen tops. The thighs were sawed off from the HG Cherudim and the ball joints to attach them were taken from the hips of the HG Freedom. Then Kotobukiya MSGs for detail. Man, that's a lot of parts.

After that, I tilted the wings up at a 45 degree angle, extended the knees, beefed the torso and raised the neck to give it an angrier, more menacing look.

It may not look like it, but this little big guy actually has five colors. Let me enumerate.

Frame parts and shields: JN Green 80% + German Grey 20%
Armor and weapons: German Grey 90% + Flat Black 10%
Chest and feet: Flat Black
Swords, Gatlings, and pistons: Titanium silver
Eyes: Gundam Marker Gold
Other than the eyes, all the above colors are Tamiya acrylics. This was then drybrushed with Titanium Silver and washed with Flat Black enamel.

My, that was a lot of talk. PICS!

Freedom Striker

My entry for MechaPinoy's in-house Formula 144 in 2010. Basically kitbashed Freedom's backpack and rail guns with a Strike-E (Strike Noir) and gave it Exia's manipulators and GN sword. It's a little dirty on the pictures because they were taken months after this was built. I took new pictures. I'll have those uploaded later. This was also one of my first kits featured in MechaPinoy's front page.

Paints used were Bosny Flat Black, Bosny Silver, Tamiya Gunmetal and Tamiya Flat White.
My first kit topcoated with Wipe N Shine.

Here's a pic taken by MDGelo during the event. It was still clean then.
I was already at the venue when I realized I didn't pack the sword in the box with it XD

SD Zapper Zaku Kai

Once again, another way-too late post. This was my entry for MechaPinoy's in house contest, SD Con 2010. The kit is from SD Gundam Force. The Zaku captain Zapper Zaku. This was one of my very first fully modified kits. And as you can see in the photos, I couldn't mod to save my life when I Built this. Holes drilled, some panel lines scribed, IC sockets inserted, putty shaping on the chest, some pla plating and the only mod that did work, proportion extensions to the torso, arms, ankles, thighs and neck. The only joint that wasn't extended was the shoulders. Finished, this kit is about 2cm taller than the original.

This kit was painted with Bosny Signal Red, Bosny Flat Black and Tamiya Gunmetal. I already had an airbrush when I did this, but have not yet properly learned to use it. So I stuck to spray cans. The rifles came from the non-grade 1/144 Strikes and the swing arm for the Gatling gun is from the Launcher striker pack.

Master Gundam Atrocitus

This build is inspired by the Red Lantern Atrocitus. It's just too bad my masking skills are not yet at par for me to put the Red Lantern insignia on to his chest. But either way, I'm satisfied with the outcome. This build is mostly OOTB. Just some prepaint mods and some snips to add some space for movement for the cape.

This build was done in 2 weeks (13 days to be exact). I found out I follow deadlines better when I write them down. Good stuff. Primed with Bosny Primer Grey and airbrushed with Tamiya acrylics.
Red: Chrome Silver 40%, Red 60%
Black: Gold leaf 50%, Flat Black: 50%
Blue: Sky Blue 50% Gunmetal 40% Flat Black 10%
